Trousers

High visibility work wear shall be worn for all site and yard work activities and dependent upon the garment shall conform to one of the following standards:
  • EN ISO 20471 Class 1 high visibility trousers
All high visibility work wear should be either Yellow or Orange in colour and be appropriate to the weather conditions. All garments must be in good clean condition, free from defects or damage such as significant rips, cuts or other damage and adequately cleaned if heavily contaminated by potentially harmful substances. Where there is a risk that employees may be subject to attacks by members of the public suitable body protection may be issued; for example stab vests.

Fire Retardant and ARC Protective Clothing

Fire Retardant and ARC Protective Clothing is required when a worker is engaged under a hot works permit, a permit to break ground or contact with any other energised systems.
Clothing should meet the requirements of EN 11612 and be manufactured from material which passes either of the two tests outlined below:
  • The Box Arc Test (EN IEC 61482-1-2) - mainly used in Europe to measure the protective performance of fabrics and clothing against the thermal effects of an electric arc.
  • The Open Arc Test (EN IEC 61482-1 or ASTM 1959-F) - mainly used in North America but is becoming more frequently used in Europe.
In both case a fabric passes the test if the heat being transferred behind the fabric would not cause 2nd degree burns to the wearer. It is important that the fire retardant clothing remains properly fastened at all times during the work; for that reason clothing with only Velcro as fasteners shall not be used.  Zip fastenings offer much better protection against the clothing accidentally bursting open during exertion by the wearer.
