Hearing Protection
Hearing protection shall be worn as required by a noise assessment, risk assessment or in a Noise Protection Zone. Due to work being undertaken close to live traffic, and the use of traditional ‘passive’ hearing protection posing a scenario where an operative’s auditory sensing and perceptual abilities are compromised, Galliford Try Highways has adopted an ‘Active Only’ Hearing Protection Policy.
Active Hearing protection uses an electronic sound transmission circuit to provide a dynamic level dependant degree of sound to the wearer, using a battery-powered series of integrated speakers and microphones. This resolves the issues presented by conventional passive hearing protection by allowing the wearer to hear. Such hearing protection is known as ‘active or ‘level-dependent’ hearing protection and is today widely available and can be sourced at a cost that is below that of the combined direct and indirect costs of conventional passive hearing protection.
Further more we also require the hearing protection systems to have the ability to record both external noise levels as well as in-ear exposure. Known as ‘Smart PPE’ this allows the employer to undertake effective noise monitoring as well as demonstrating that workers are not being exposed to harmful levels of noise.
All hearing protection used on Galliford Highways sites must be certified according to Regulation (EU) 2016/425, RoHS directive 2011/65/EU and be tested to EN 352-3: for ear-muffs attached to a safety helmet.
All hearing protection should be clean, free from damage and defect, well fitting and suitable for the noise hazard exposure levels.
EAVE is a preferred brand of hearing protection for Galliford Try employees.
