Have You Entered Yet ?

Have you completed your application for the Highways England Awards yet? If not,
you now have less than a week to get your nominations in before the closing date at
5pm on Friday 6 December.
If you’re struggling with which category to enter read through the criteria on the
website to see where your idea best fits, watch our top tips video, and see who won
this year.
One such winner was Tim Burton, who works for Highways England in the Strategy
and Planning directorate, who won a health and safety award for ‘Leading Behaviour
Change for Safety’. This award, which has developed into the ‘Home Safe and Well
Champion’ celebrates an individual who has exceeded expectations to improve
safety through attitude, behaviour and conduct, and will be a role model for the
Home Safe and Well Approach.
Unlike the other award safety categories ‘Home Safe and Well’ allows everyone to
think about the meaning of what staying safe and well means to them. It could be
that your team has introduced a new initiative or activity that has improved fitness in
the team, or helped reduce stress.
Tim used the company Highways to Health challenge to champion an initiative in his
team to change their approach to meetings and encourage them to become more
active and go for walks to have discussions rather than sit in meeting rooms, as well
ass encouraging his colleagues to attend a group weekly yoga session. He acted on
the quizzical looks around the office to initiate conversation with colleagues about
the benefits not sitting for long periods without taking movement breaks, and has
steadily changed the mentality towards health and safety around the office.
Speaking on his award Tim said: ‘Winning the leading behavioural change for safety
award means a tremendous amount to me, it’s a result of Highways England
recognising all the hard work I’ve put into helping improve my colleagues’ health and
wellbeing. Since I joined the company 3 years ago, this has inspired me to put more
work into the area of health and wellbeing.’
So, if you haven’t put your application in yet please do sit down with your team and
think about what you have done that could win you an award. It’s not always the
grand gestures that win the awards but the small changes that improve the health
and wellbeing of those around you. For details on how to apply please visit:

Celebrating the best in our business

We are excited to announce nominations are now being accepted for the Highways England Awards.
This is the second Highways England Awards, and this year we aim to set the bar even higher and celebrate the individuals, teams, projects and companies who have committed to innovate our business.
They are designed to recognise people in both our company and our supply chain who have achieved outstanding results in the safety, customer experience and delivery of our network. This is your opportunity to highlight the great work you are doing to deliver safe, innovative work that provides value for customers.

The awards are open to colleagues across the business, our suppliers and their supply chain (extended supply chain, small and medium enterprises, etc). You can find the details of each category and how to enter on our website: www.highwaysengland.co.uk/awards, including the prestigious Chairman’s Award which will be chosen from one of the winners.
The awards ceremony will be held at the ICC, Birmingham on 30 April 2020 where we will announce winners from Highways England and our supply chain for each of the three award categories: safety, customer and delivery.

Submissions can be made from 12pm on 23 September and 5pm on 6 December. This is your opportunity to highlight the great work you are doing and encourage people in all areas of our business to enter. If you have regular contact with our supply chain, please encourage them to apply. We look forward to seeing your submissions.
